Doug Ball is an author captivated by the American West, writing books spanning its old, recent, and modern history, including captivating alternate histories of Arizona. His work presents a personal picture of the land he loves, drawing inspiration from his experiences. Having explored many callings, Doug ultimately found his passion in writing and is now the author of over twenty-five books across multiple genres, including Christian books reflecting his deep faith and knowledge of God and Jesus Christ. His storytelling journey began during his 20-year service in the U.S. Navy aboard submarines, where the long, dark watches provided fertile ground for conjuring plot lines.
Doug’s life reflects a diverse tapestry of experiences beyond the Navy. He has spent the better part of his life deeply connected to Arizona’s countryside, values, and culture. His varied path includes roles as a builder, a cattle rancher for 40 years, teacher, cowboy, and a dedicated hiker who recently completed the Arizona Trail on foot over 13 years. He is also a retired Pastor of 40 years, though he remains an elder in his church and still preaches on special occasions, showcasing a lifelong dedication to service and faith.
In his personal life, Doug resides with his wife, Patti, and their three dogs in the small Northern Arizona high desert community of Witch Wells, located between Navajo and Apache lands, where their church forms the heart of the town. Their six children are grown, allowing Doug more time for his passions. He is a well-loved and helpful member of this tight-knit community, embodying the values he often writes about.
